The driver of a semitrailer was ejected and killed early Tuesday after he crashed into a medic unit on westbound Interstate 70 in Clark County.
Ramiz Guliev, 30, of New York was the semitrailer driver killed in the crash, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Springfield Post said.
The incident started as a single-vehicle crash reported around 1:39 a.m. on westbound I-70 about two miles east of I-675, Lt. Brian Aller said.
A squad of medics and one firefighter responded, parking in front of a silver SUV.
After the crew treated the victim of the crash, Carnita Crowly, of Springfield, and got back in the medic vehicle, around 1:57 a.m., a semi drove up the right side of the road and struck the SUV, pushing it forward into the medic vehicle.
The semi then continued off the right side of the road and flipped. Guliev was ejected as the truck rolled, and was killed when it landed on top of him, investigators said.
The passenger in the semi, Misha Mamedov, was sleeping inside the bunk but was able to escape by himself. He was taken to Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek then Kettering Medical Center for treatment.
Crowly was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, and the two EMS personnel were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Crash reconstruction and cleanup blocked portions of the westbound lanes of I-70 into late Tuesday morning. All lanes of the highway were reopened around 10:30 a.m.
When asked what could have been done to avoid this, Aller said, “Slow down. Slow down and wear your seat belt.”
Motorists need to be mindful of the snow and ice on the roads, and to be aware of emergency crews, he said.
“We all have families,” Aller said.
