The initial fire was reported Friday around 6 p.m. at the building, 1401 Sheridan Ave. that crews watched throughout the night to make sure it didn’t rekindle.

According to a Springfield fire official, there is still a little bit of fire underneath the collapsed material so crews on scene put the fire out as it flared back up.
It’s unknown how this fire started, but it believed to be suspicious.
UPDATE @ 8:40 p.m. (Aug.30):
A fire that broke out Friday at the former Cooper Energy Services site has “a high degree of suspicion,” Matt Smith, assistant chief of the Springfield Fire Division said.

Crews contained the fire to one building at the 17-building industrial complex.
It had been burning for a few hours before someone noticed it, and firefighters had to fight the blaze from the outside because the roof collapsed and they were unable to go inside, Smith said.
Crews will need to watch is through the night to make sure it doesn’t rekindle.

FIRST REPORT
Heavy black smoke and flames were coming this evening from a fire at the former Cooper Energy Services site.
The fire was reported sometime before 6 p.m. at the building at 1401 Sheridan Ave. in Springfield.
The building is believed to be vacant, and there are no reports of injuries.
Sheridan Avenue is closed to traffic.
