Cottrel: New Carlisle, Enon holiday festivals ‘truly great events’

Last weekend Springfield kicked off the Christmas Season with its spectacular Holiday in the City.

This Saturday it will be Western Clark County’s turn to sparkle with Christmas Spirit. Like Santa’s sleigh, Saturday will be stuffed full of so many events, it will take careful planning to see as many as you want. I wish I had enough space to include more information about each event because so much planning and work has gone into the preparation.

These truly are great events.

On Dec. 2, the Christmas countdown will continue with jolly events planned in Enon, New Carlisle, Tecumseh Middle School and Upper Valley Mall.

New Carlisle’s celebration begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the arrival of Santa’s airplane at the Andy Barnhart Memorial Airport. Santa then rushes over to Main Street in New Carlisle will he will be the star of the 32nd annual Christmas Parade.

The parade begins at Main and Madison streets. Christmas and Storybook costume contest participants will be in the parade, in addition to the Tecumseh Marching Band. The parade ends at the firehouse, 315 N. Church St., where prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

Meanwhile watch out for the Grinch!

Family and Youth Initiatives’ main office is just south of New Carlisle, but for just Saturday, Dec. 2, you will find FYI in the former Chakeres Theater at Upper Valley Mall. FYI and Charitable Recycling of Dayton will be combining forces to co-host The Grinch Who Stole Breakfast. This activity- and food-filled event will be held at two times, 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Those who attend this event will be crazy busy with “games, prizes, a costume contest, craft making for gifts for Mom and Dad, coloring contests and lots more,” according the Pat Banaszak, FYI director.

“With the two groups getting together, you know there will be lots to do, lots of laughter, and all kinds of door prizes and a room full of giveaways,” Banaszak said.

Reservations are required and can be made online at www.fyiohio.org. Price is $7 for kids, $10 for adults with a maximum of $25 for a family of five for admittance. Those without computer access can call 937-845-0403 to make reservations.

On Saturday evening, Dec. 2, Enon residents will wait for Santa by the Enon Log House, 45 Indian Drive, which is right behind the Enon Village Offices. Caroling will begin at 6:45 p.m. and will be led by the Greenon High School Choir. Santa will arrive in his unique way to light the village Christmas Tree.

The Enon Log Cabin is a particularly perfect place for children to meet Santa and pose for photographs. Do not forget your camera!

Warm cider and cookies will be served by the Enon Community Historical Society at the Mike Barry Research Center next door. The historical society gift shop will also be open for Christmas shopping. Rumor has it that a few jars of homemade apple butter are still available.

I’m always so proud of these extra nice events and how well our communities start off the holiday. Let the Christmas season begin!
