Costco is closed for Fourth of July, but here are the stores and restaurants staying open

Consumers have several options for shopping and dining out for this week's Fourth of July holiday.

Unlike Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, most major retailers are open Thursday, though some stores have special holiday hours. Many pharmacies will be closed.

Costco is the largest retailer staying closed on Independence Day. The wholesale club is also closed for other holidays, including New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Like with other federal holidays, it's considered a good time to buy a car, a mattress and shop other sales.

If you're not firing up the grill, most restaurants are open, with some offering active-military and retirees a discount or free meal.

Stores open Independence Day

Most major retailers will be open Thursday, along with convenience stores and gas stations. Some stores will have shorter hours and others may have extended hours. To be on the safe side, check with your closest location.

Some franchise locations may decide to stay closed for the holiday.
