Several local organizations are joining forces to perform service in the community on Earth Day – and they’re in need of volunteers.

The first Clark County Service Day will be held at 8 a.m. on April 22 at Snyder Park.

The United Way of Clark, Champaign and Madison counties, Community Mercy Health Partners, Leadership Clark County, the Community Health Foundation, the Nehemiah Foundation, Clark State Community College and Catholic Central are collaborating on the event, said United Way Director Kerry Pedraza.

“The idea behind it is for us as a community to come together and roll up our sleeves and give a little bit of sweat equity and see the tremendous things that can happen when together we join forces to make our community better,” Pedraza said.

The collaborative asked more than 20 nonprofit organizations in Clark County about possible service that could be performed for their organizations. The group created about 280 possible volunteer spots for a variety of special projects, Pedraza said.

“It could be anything from cleaning flower beds or painting,” Pedraza said.

They’re also working with United Senior Services and Clark County Development Disabilities to identify residents who may need help as well, Pedraza said.

“We’re hanging shelves and doing outside yard work that they may not be able to complete,” she said.

The organizations are seeking volunteers for a variety of projects, including landscaping at Norm’s Place or helping with the Project Woman 5K.

“The more, the better,” Pedraza said.

The event will begin at Snyder Park, and the groups will eventually disperse to their service projects, she said. The event also coincides with the Great Downtown Cleanup, held on April 23.
