Clark County schools recognize Veterans Day

Several area schools held Veterans Day observances Monday with special events and commemorations a day after the official holiday because it fell on Sunday.

New Carlisle Elementary had a Veterans Day program in the morning, Tecumseh High School had an inaugural Veterans Day breakfast and a flag-raising ceremony, while South Vienna Schools and Enon Primary were just some of the other area schools paying tribute to U.S. military veterans.

At Kenwood Elementary in Springfield, the school celebrated in the gym with parents and veterans joining. The band played music, and everyone was given mini-flags to wave. Many of the teachers had shown videos and were incorporating reports about veterans into the day’s curriculum.

Tracy Evans, a third-grade teacher at Kenwood and a veteran of the Army National Guard said she was happy to be at a school where the staff recognized veterans. The events are always exciting for everyone involved, including the students, she said.

“Veterans Day is really one of my favorite holidays. It’s always good to know your history and how it all got started.”

Evans said that all eight of her siblings are veterans and that is important to her. “Veterans Day is really one of my favorite holidays. It’s always good to know your history and how it all got started,” she said.

Meanwhile, Tecumseh Local Schools had a similar celebration, with the band, parents and local veterans taking part in song and dance to commemorate the service of veterans.

A local veteran stopped by with his son. “To me it’s an honor, it just goes to show that the community and the kids see the value in our country. The veterans that are receiving honor today, it’s a wonderful thing,” said Thomas Holmes, who is retired from the U.S. Navy.
