Boehner opens Springfield office

Clark’s new representative also plans open office hours around county.

Speaker of the House and Ohio 8th District Rep. John Boehner has opened a local office inside City Hall.

The office opened on the third floor of City Hall on Jan. 7.

“My district offices provide a convenient location for constituents to meet with congressional staff, voice their opinions and receive assistance with services. I’m honored to work for the people of Clark County, and having an office in Springfield allows me and my staff to serve the community directly,” Boehner said.

Boehner recently picked up representation of Clark County after the redistricting process moved the county into the 8th district from the 7th district, held by former Rep. Steve Austria. The state lost two of its seats in the House of Representatives because of population loss.

Boehner also has local offices in Westchester and Troy. Boehner has served as the 8th district’s representative since 1991.

After hearing of Austria’s departure, local leaders didn’t want to lose congressional exposure and asked for Speaker Boehner’s office to have a presence in Springfield.

“They were very willing to work with us to locate an office here in City Hall, which will be very accessible for any member of the public who wants to come in and talk about issues with the congressman’s representatives,” City Manager Jim Bodenmiller said.

Springfield is the second-largest city in the 8th District as of July 2011 behind Hamilton. The 8th district also includes Westchester Township, Middletown, Troy and Greenville.

Civic leaders didn’t want to lose the long-standing congressional presence in the county.

“It’s important for the citizens of Springfield and Clark County,” Bodenmiller said.

Boehner’s office is open five days per week and has a full-time staff.

The office will also hold Open Doors where 8th District residents can voice their concerns face-to-face with congressional staff.

They’ll be held in Clark County on the second Tuesday of the month at:

• The New Carlisle General Administration Office, 331 South Church St., 10:30 a.m. and

• The Enon Administrative Office, 363 East Main St., 1:30 p.m.

The Open Doors will also be held on the third Tuesday of the month at:

• The Bethel Township Trustees Office, 333 Lake Road, Medway, 10:30 a.m.

• The Clark County Public Library, Houston Branch, 5 W. Jamestown Street, South Charleston, 12:30 p.m.

• The South Vienna Town Hall, 143 West Main Street, 2 p.m.
