Area nursing homes above average

State agency survey says most area senior care facilities scored well.

SPRINGFIELD — Area nursing homes and assisted living facilities fared well in statewide resident satisfaction surveys conducted biannually by the state Department of Aging.

No Clark or Champaign County facilities cracked the top 25 nursing homes or assisted living facilities, but the bulk of them finished above state averages.

Eaglewood Care Center, at 2000 Villa Road, is the top nursing home in both counties, based on the surveys conducted in 2011. The facility scored a 92.1 percent satisfaction rate, well more than the state average of 87.1 percent. Essex of Springfield, 2317 E. Home Road, scored the lowest with 84 percent.

Assisted living facility residents rated Clark Memorial Home, at 106 Kewbury Road, with a 97.7 percent satisfaction rate — higher than the state average of 92.3 percent for residential facilities. Community Hearth and Home at El Camino scored the lowest among assisted living facilities with 79.8 percent.

There has been improvement since the 2009 survey, said Beverley Laubert, Ohio long-term care ombudsman.

“We feel very positively about that,” Laubert said. The ODA has “become more person centered with new quality incentives as part of medicare reimbursement programs,” she said.

Erin Pettigrew, management analyst supervisor with the ODA said the department encourages facilities to use these results to find places for improvement.

“The ombudsman will follow up with residents about what they’re seeing and the quality of improvements,” Pettigrew said.

Administrators for Essex of Springfield were unavailable for comment. But Hearth and Home El Camino officials said they do value and take into account patient surveys.

The facility at El Camino is a dementia and Alzheimer’s unit, and many of these patients did not understand the survey, said Lindy Simpson, Hearth and Home administrator.

“Some people have been mandated by the court system to be here, so they’re not happy here,” Simpson said. She noted that another local Hearth and Home on Harding Road, which is not a dementia unit, was given a 93.4 percent satisfaction rating.

At Clark Memorial Home, ranked as the best assisted living facility in the area, care is the primary reason for their success, said Donna McAdams, the director.

They currently have 20 staff members and a full occupancy of 20 residents, so everyone gets plenty of attention.

“It’s the dedication of the staff to making sure all of their needs are met,” McAdams said. “It’s going above and beyond.”

Eaglewood Care Center, the top nursing home, is a companion to Eaglewood Village, which ranked in the bottom for local assisted living facilities.

“I think it has a lot to do with how many people respond,” said Wendy Archer, marketing director for Eaglewood. She said those in assisted living facilities are looking at amenities instead of care.

“People come to work every day for great care,” Archer said. “It’s direct care that we look at. Every patient could be our mother or our grandmother.”
