Lowry Bridge reopens; finishing touches remain

Work on the Springfield bridge is expected to be completely done by March 31.

The Lowry Bridge on S. Lowry Avenue just south of Pleasant Street is now open to public traffic, even though work on the project remains.

The bridge, which crosses over the Little Miami Scenic Trail, has been closed since July 25. Springfield City Engineer Leo Shanayda told the Springfield News-Sun that the bridge is usable and almost finished. The bridge needs sealer on the concrete, which can only be applied in weather conditions warmer than 45 degrees, according to Shanayda. The completion date for the bridge is offically March 31, 2017, because Shanayda said he thinks by then the weather will be warm enough to apply the sealer.

“But if it warms up before then, we’ll complete it before then,” he said.

Shanayda filed a change order Dec. 14 requesting the city commission to approve and confirm changes to the contract with R.B. Jergens Contractors, Inc. The order detailed additional construction to the bridge, all of which was completed by Dec. 16, except for the concrete sealer. The additional construction cost the city $29,092, putting the total cost of the bridge construction at $584,974.
