“I didn’t see it as necessary,” Lohnes said. “It was not according to our calender and threw a wrench into our plans.”
The idea was brought up during a county commission meeting last week by Hartley.
The additional day off gives county employees 13 paid holiday days off. The county administrator’s office was unable to say how many workers would have the day off or how much it would cost the county to give employees the paid day off.
The county commission office will be closed largely because the main parking lot behind the building is being redone, both Hartley and Detrick said.
Detrick said the process takes four days to complete, making it more difficult to get to their offices.
The parking lot was resurfaced last year but the process didn’t have enough time to finish. Closing the offices from Thursday to Sunday will give the lot the correct amount of time to be finished, Detrick said, and therefore will save money in the long run.
The offices that will be closed on Friday are those that directly fall under the county commission. The Clark County Treasurer’s office, the sheriff’s office and some other operations will be open on Friday.
Detrick advised that anyone who has to conduct business with any county offices on Friday should call ahead of time to see if that office is open.
Sheriff Gene Kelly said all civilian employees at the sheriff’s office will be given the day off. But all deputies, nurses and dispatchers will work their regular shift. The deputies and others working won’t receive any premium pay for working on the holiday.
Detrick said that even though his office is closed, he will still take phone calls and respond to emails.
Springfield city offices will remain open on Friday, including City Hall. The National Trail Parks and Recreation District also will be open.
