The event will be highlighted by former Springfielder Rev. Darryl L. Simmons’ delivery of the “Living the Dream” message.

Local high school students and innovative youth-focused programs will be honored and Springfield-based historically disadvantaged businesses will also be recognized.

At Wittenberg University, Bernadette Evans, a 1989 graduate of the school, will be the keynote speaker for the Witt Series’ Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation at 11:15 a.m. Monday in Weaver Chapel on campus.

The event, titled “Assignment of Fire,” is free and open to the public.

Wittenberg began recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. before there was an official national recognition and before the Witt Series began through its Concerned Black Students program. It has featured high-profile speakers including civil rights activists who served with King and were inspired by him.

Evans also earned a Master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School and works with various groups in Wilmington, Del., including improving community-police relations and has written an upcoming book on the subject.

John Young, associate dean for multicultural affairs at Wittenberg, had several discussions with Evans during her undergraduate years and isn’t surprised with where she ended up.

“She’s done some really good work to bridge the gap,” Young said. “Bernadette was a very sharp student when she was here. I’m anxious to hear what she has to say on these timely issues and how she’s going about them in Delaware.”

The guest speaker will be Deacon James Bacon of St. John Missionary Church. Dean Simms, Par Tolliver, Tanya Miller and Aleeya Jones will provide musical selections, while Jethro Burch will recite King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The celebration is free and open to the public. Doors open at 1 p.m. and the building will be closed for all other activities in observance of the holiday.
