Springfield woman accused of faking domestic abuse, extorting man

A Springfield woman is accused of trying to obtain $300 by threatening to have a man arrested for domestic violence, even though she knew he committed no crime, according to court records.

Ariana Whitt, 27, is charged with extortion in Clark County Municipal Court. She pleaded not guilty to the charge and her bond was set at $25,000.

Springfield police began their investigation on Sunday when they were called to a home on South Burnett Street in reference to a domestic violence situation. Whitt told police there, according to the report, that she was sent by her grandmother to get $300 from a man.

“(The man) refused to give her the money and an altercation occurred,” the report says Whitt told police. “Ariana stated that during the altercation, (he) hit her in the back with a silver, metal baseball bat.”

The woman showed officers her back, the report says, but they didn’t see any visible injury.

“Ariana initially stated that she did not want to press charges because she did not want (him) to lose his job,” the report says.

Officers then spoke to the man who said Whitt called him and told him she was coming over to get money, the report says, but she could hear her grandmother in the background telling him not to give her money.

“(The man) stated that he refused to give Ariana the money and they got into an argument,” the report says. “The argument persisted and (The man) stated that he told Ariana to leave multiple times but she refused. (The man) admitted that he pushed Ariana out the door and grabbed a wooden bat and hit the door but denies ever hitting Ariana with the bat.”

The man then showed officers text messages he said was sent to him by Whitt. In them, she says that he needs to give her $300 or go to jail, the report says.

Officers asked Whitt if she would fill out a statement and she agreed to, the report says, even after they told her that she didn’t have to. When she finished filling out the paperwork, she was arrested, the report says.

The report says Whitt didn’t comply with officers when told to get into the police cruiser and once inside started kicking the window of the cruiser.

A next court date is not set in the case, according to online records.
