Springfield man allegedly runs from traffic stop, leaves 2 kids behind

A man is accused of running away from a traffic stop and leaving his children behind after police alleged they found drugs in his truck.

Khallid Hurt, 24, of Springfield, has been charged with two counts of child endangering, failure to comply with officers orders, escape and tampering with evidence. Hurt was pulled over on June 21 on McCreight Avenue after a Clark County deputy alleged he didn’t have a front license plate, according to court records. He was expected to appear in Clark County Municipal Court on Thursday morning.

“When I approached the vehicle, I could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” Clark County Deputy Bryan Beller wrote in a court affidavit.

He said he asked Hurt about the smell and was told that Hurt had just bought the truck and and wasn’t aware of drugs. Beller noticed 3- and 5-year-old boys in the truck.

“I then had him exit the vehicle and I asked him if I could pat him down and he said, ‘Yes,’” Beller wrote. “I then patted him down and I felt large rolls of money in his pocket.”

Beller alleged he found $4,000 and upon searching the truck he allegedly found marijuana, fentanyl, “possibly crack” and a digital scale, according to court records.

Beller said while he was investigating, Hurt “jumped in the passenger window, grabbed the bag of narcotics and fled the area. I gave several commands to stop and he refused and kept running,” Beller says in the affidavit.

Hurt left the children behind, Beller says in the report. The boys’ mother was located and she came to McCreight Avenue and took the children, court records say.
