Southeastern HS student taken into custody after gun found in vehicle

A Southeastern High School student was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after administration officials found a gun in the student’s vehicle, according district statement posted on Facebook.

The incident involved “a student possessing a firearm in the closed console of the student’s vehicle, which was parked in the high school parking lot,” Superintendent David Shea wrote in the post on one of the district’s Facebook pages.

The firearm was found by the high school administration and school resource officer during a “properly authorized search” of the student’s vehicle, the post says.

“The student was taken into custody immediately by law enforcement authorities without incident,” according to the post. “The student has not returned to school at this time, and no other weapons of any kind were found in the student’s vehicle or on school property.”

The South Charleston Police Department said because the incident is currently under investigation, no additional information about the student was available.

The school administration, school resource officer, and the South Charleston Police Department all assisted in handling this incident, the district said.

“If you see something or sense something out of place or out of the ordinary within our school community, please report it to a school administractor, law enforcement, or to our School Resource Office,” the post says. “The safety and security of our campus and our students is our top priority.”
