A man has been indicted in connection to an investigation that began over a year ago leading to allegations that he raped a boy under the age of 13 in Champaign County.

Jordan Butler, 31, was indicted in Champaign County Common Pleas Court on charges of rape, gross sexual imposition, two counts of attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and soliciting. He has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Mechanicsburg police began their investigation into the case in August 2018 when they were contacted by Job and Family Services of Champaign County, an affidavit says. The affidavit says a child victim had reported being raped by Butler.

“Child protective services interviewed child victim and his siblings on Aug. 10, 2018,” the affidavit says. “Child victim stated during his interview that approximately one month prior to this interview in the morning or early afternoon he was woken up by Jordan Bulter touching him.”

The child said Butler was touching his private area.

“Child victim reported that Jordan Butler hit his head on the bunk bed because someone attempted, or Jordan Butler believed that someone was attempting, to come into the room and it startled him,” the affidavit says.

The child victim told authorities that after being interrupted, the man asked the boy into a bathroom so that he could continue assaulting him.

The incident wasn’t the first time Bulter had sexually assaulted the victim, according to the affidavit. The child told authorities that he had been violated since he was very young and didn’t know that what was happening to him was wrong until he realized that none of his friends at school had gone through similar incidents, the affidavit says.

The victim told authorities that he tried to stop the abuse and told Butler he didn’t want to participate anymore, but didn’t go to authorities because he liked the man and didn’t want to get him into trouble, according to the affidavit.

However, the man’s attempts didn’t stop, the affidavit says.

“Child victim reported that when he told Jordan Butler that he did not want to perform these sexual activities with him that Jordan Bulter would pressure him by offering ice cream, video games or other incentives to get the child victim to comply with sexual acts with him.”

Mechanicsburg police said during the interview, the child said two other boys were victims of Bulter. Police interviewed the boys, who were a couple of years older, and both disclosed that Butler had attempted to perform sexual acts on them but they refused.

The affidavit says Butler moved out of the state shortly after the alleged incidents and authorities didn’t make contact with him until earlier this year. During their interview, Butler denied any wrongdoing.

He entered his plea on Thursday. No next court date has been set.
