Pool Safety: Make your first dip of the season a healthy one

As warm spring weather persists and summer approaches, many will be heading out for a swim.

Before you take that first dip of the season, be sure to confirm the pool you’re swimming in is free of contamination.

“All public pools are inspected and licensed by health inspectors, but personal pools are not,” said Dr. Dan Brannen, Greene County Public Health.

Swimming in contaminated water can lead to diarrhea, rashes, ear and respiratory infections.

If the pool doesn’t look clean or smell good, don’t swim in it, he said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a few steps for healthy swimming:

  • Check the pool
  • Keep out of the water if you have open wounds or are ill
  • Apply sunscreen
  • Use lifeguards and flotation devices
