1. Do not go hungry

This is the number one rule to save money and eat better. According to a 2013 study published in Jama Internal Medicine, going to the grocery store after short-term fasts will result in a person buying higher- calories foods with less nutritional value.

2. Make a list

Throughout the week, make a list of the things you need. This will save you from last-minute scrambling. Before going to the store, rewrite your list according to how the store is laid out. That will ensure you are not doubling back to the area you have already been at.

3. Bring a cloth bag

Many stores offer discounts to those who bring in their own cloth bags. Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and some Krogers offer such discounts.

4. Go on off times

Don’t get stuck in long lines at the grocery store by going early in the morning or late at night where you can beat the rush to the register.

5. “Shop the perimeter”

For those who like healthy options, shopping the perimeter will be your best bet. Most of the fresh meats and greens will stored along the perimeter of the store, and sweets and high-calorie products will be stored in the middle.

6. Reward programs

Many stores have reward programs which can save you money. For example, Kroger has their fuel points, Meijer has mPerks, and Target has their Redcard.

7. Coupons

Always check online before leaving home to see what deals your grocery store is offering. In fact, many stores have apps that show exclusive deals for their customers.

And finally….

9. Treat yourself!

Shopping can be a task that many do not enjoy. Treat yourself with a special treat such as your favorite ice cream, a smoothie or fruit.
