We’re hoping readers will be just as generous this year.
The mission of Artemis Center, a nonprofit organization, is to end domestic violence. Since 1985, the center has served more than 80,000 victims of domestic violence in our community by providing advocacy, a hotline, court accompaniment, children’s therapy and other services designed to help victims and their children stay safe from violence in their homes.
The cellphone collection program is designed to provide threatened women with a phone they can use to call 9-1-1.
Donated phones are cleared of all information and either given to clients for use in emergencies or recycled for cash to be put back into Artemis programs. Last year almost $3,000 was raised for the cause and the goal for 2012 is $4,000.
You don’t need to have accessories for the phone, and the agency can also use phones that are broken or damaged.
Artemis is at 310 W. Monument Ave., Dayton, OH 45402. The phones can be delivered any time between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. You’ll get a tax receipt in the mail about a week after donating.
The folks at Artemis also are hoping some of our readers will want to start a yearlong collection program at your workplace, school or house of worship. It’s a great project for a community organization that wants to make a difference. If you’re interested, call Lee at (937) 531-5709.
Artemis will also be hosting its 22nd annual gala on Saturday evening, Feb. 18. Tickets are $100. If you’re interested in attending, call (937) 461-5091.
More nice feedback: A gentleman stopped me in an elevator last weekend to tell me how much he appreciated learning about St. Leonard’s need for wood in a recent Make a Difference column.
“I delivered eight boxes of beautiful wood from my workshop, and even got to see someone playing with one of the little cars the residents are making from the wood!” he said, obviously delighted. “I was so glad to know my wood could be used in such a great way.”
If you know of a nonprofit organization that would like to publish its wish list, contact Meredith Moss: mmoss@coxohio.com Be sure and leave a daytime phone number. Happy New Year!
