A day at the office for psychic and medium Chip Coffey is like having Halloween year-round.

It goes with the territory when your special talent is to see, hear and communicate with the dead.

Coffey, who appeared on the television series’ “Paranormal State” and “Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal,” will give a live gallery reading from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at the State Theatre, 19 S. Fountain Ave.

The event is sponsored by Springfield’s Ghost Hunting Source.

Coffey has run the gamut of paranormal experiences, from being touched to pushed.

The first part of his presentation will include 40-45 minutes of generalized audience questions. The second will consist of gallery readings.

“I’m not trying to convince or convert anybody,” said Coffey. “I’ve seen unusual things, strange and sometimes miraculous things. You can’t always explain it, you can’t always understand it, but you can’t deny it.”

Coffey developed psychic abilities at a young age. He was a human caller ID, predicting phone calls and callers before they happened. His paranormal abilities emerged as an adult, 12 years ago.

A coworker at the time’s deceased brother suddenly started communicating with Coffey. Because of having grown up with psychic abilities, this new skill wasn’t alarming.

“It’s like you’ve never played the piano and one day you can play really well,” he said.

There are many misconceptions about what he does, such as imaginative horror movie screenwriters, depicting the dead as evil and out to destroy.

While not the norm, Coffey’s had experiences that were scary enough. One of the better known episodes of “Paranormal State” saw him investigating a demonically-infested house in Syracuse, N.Y. where a 3-year-old girl spoke in an ugly, masculine voice.

He also cleared up misconceptions about psychics. People are quick to judge it as fraud for not being able to predict earthquakes or winning lottery numbers.

Coffey said neither psychic predictions nor paranormal encounters are planned; the feeling or contact appears at random.

Although a celebrity to paranormal enthusiasts, Coffey isn’t comfortable with fame, preferring to think of himself as well-known.

“I’m just another piece of investigative equipment hoping to help make sense,” he said.

While in Springfield, Coffey will visit the Robertson Building, home of Ghost Hunting Source, reputed for drawing ghost hunters and paranormal groups due to its haunted nature.

Coffey has clients all over the world he does readings for. He sums up his goals in two words: comfort and healing, which he hopes some of the Springfield audience will find.

“If you come with an open mind you’ll find it enlightening,” he said.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $55 each and are available in advance from Ghost Hunting Source, 14 N. Lowry Ave., by phone at 937-926-3911. Space permitting, tickets will also be sold at the door Saturday.
