New event to feature food trucks, haunted trail, golf cart parade and more

The Festival of Flight will be held at Wright State’s Nutter Center on Saturday, Oct. 5.

A new community event dedicated to flight will have something for everyone including flyovers, sports, music, a haunted trail, a golf cart parade, beer and food trucks.

The Festival of Flight, a free family festival hosted by Wright State University, will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nutter Center.

The festival will celebrate aviation and highlight the importance of the Miami Valley’s aviation heritage with a jam-packed schedule of entertainment.

“It’s no secret that the Dayton community takes great pride in our rich aviation legacy. What this festival will provide is the ability to engage young and old alike in the heritage of aviation as well as STEM aspects of flight," Amy Spowart, executive director of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, said in a release.

Hands-on and experiences, many geared toward children, will be held throughout the day along with demonstrations by WSU teachers and researchers.

Sports fans can watch a variety of sporting events throughout the day including the USA Patriots Amputee Softball Team take on local military personnel, a vintage baseball children’s clinic and a softball game matching Wright State and Cedarville University.

Flyovers are planned throughout the day from the Fastrax Professional Skydiving Team at 10:50 a.m.; WACO Air Museum’s YMF-5 at 12:25 p.m.; Red Star flying team at 2:30 p.m.; “Champion Gal,” a B-25 World War II bomber at 4 p.m. and World War I biplanes at 5:30 p.m.

Three local bands, Lights Out, Summer Highway and Mad River Dogs, will perform throughout the day.

A food and drink hanger will be on site as will a variety of food trucks including El Meson, Claybourne Grill, HaolePino Hawaiian Filipino, Greek Street, Good Golly Miss Molly, Rock Stop and Roll, Hunger Paynes, Kona Ice, Riddle’s Ribs, Pit to Plate, Philly Pretzel, Lee’s Famous Recipe and Rolling Indulgence.

A beer garden will offer beer and flights of wine.

At 5 p.m., a mascot challenge will take place. At 6 p.m., a golf cart parade will being. At 7 p.m., the Fright or Flight Haunted Trail opens.

The Festival of Flight is sponsored by the City of Fairborn, Wright State University and the Wright State Alumni Association, in partnership with the Dayton Regional STEM School, the Miami Valley Restaurant Association, the National Aviation Heritage Alliance and the National Aviation Hall of Fame, with participation by the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
