Freshwater Farms to welcome summer with food, drink, music

Greet the most anticipated season of the year with food, drink and live entertainment, all outdoors, of course.

Freshwater Farms of Ohio’s Summer Kick-off Celebration will bring all of that together for two days, 4-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

A happy hour both nights will begin with specials from 4-6 p.m. Margaritas and frozen sangria from Charlie’s Bar will be available.

Live music will start at 6 p.m. with father-son blues, jazz and funk band Troubled Waters from Dayton on Friday and Reform School Reunion on Saturday performing songs from yesterday and today.

The cover charge for the concerts is $5.

While known for its annual Fish and Shrimp Festival each September, Freshwater Farms has spent the last several months establishing a new initiation, said Dr. Dave Smith, Freshwater Farms president and founder.

“We’re transitioning to a farm-friendly attraction,” he said. “We have the infrastructure in place from the festival, so why not use it more often?”

While the Fish and Shrimp Festival draws big crowds, Smith was concerned that about 90 percent come from out of the Urbana area.

Over the winter, the farm did wine and food tastings that gained a following he hopes will carry over.

The farm will continue with a version of that on Friday evening with a wine, beer and food tasting on its Sunset Terrace. Admission is $15 and includes cover for the concert.

The food tasting will include an antipasto display of dips, meats and cheeses, four demi courses and mini dessert. Drink taste tickets cost $1 each.

Reservations are encouraged for the tastings at 937-652-3701.

Other foods will be available both evenings from seafood specialties to cookout favorites such as brats for the “seafood impaired,” as Smith puts it.

The events will go on rain or shine due to the pavilion area and event tents. There will also be children’s activities.

This will be the first in a series of concerts on the third weekend each month at the farm. Each will have themes.

“We have a lot of talent in this area, and we want to do this over two nights,” Smith said. “We’re really upping our game and hope others will discover what we have.”
