Vince Morris is an Ohio guy at heart, but like many standup comedians also working in film and television, the Columbus native migrated west. He spent more than a decade in Los Angeles, but relocated to Dayton in 2008 shortly before the birth of his daughter.
Morris, who is performing at the Funny Bone Comedy Club through Sunday, July 3, sat down recently to discuss Ohio, Los Angeles, fatherhood and more.
Ohio pride: “This is my home state. I love it. You’ve got a front yard and a back yard. You can use words like ‘please,’ ‘excuse me’ and ‘thank you,’ and people actually listen. If you tell somebody you’re going to be over at their house in 20 minutes, damn it, you’re there in 20 minutes. In L.A. if you tell somebody they have to be at the house, they have to leave literally 24 hours earlier to be there at that time.”
Daddy’s girl: “My daughter is 21/2 years old and she’s a handful. I love her — I’m going to keep her — but she’s a handful. I tell her every day, ‘Daddy is only going to keep you for a lifetime, and then after that, you’re on your own.’”
New views: “Having a child is a unique thing, so now I’ve got some daddy material. I’m always gathering life material, and having a child gives another perspective of life in addition to the crazy life I’ve had thus far. I’ve had many, many years to develop that, but I’m excited because this is another area to explore.”
Soul restored: “I’m still working and hustling and doing the road. I still go back and forth, but I’m not out in L.A. nearly as much as I used to be, for the sole fact the baby is here, but also because I dislike that city — I can’t tell you how much. It’s good to have a soul right now.”
