A parade hosted by the Vandalia-Butler Chamber of Commerce will kick off the Dayton Air Show a day early, at 7 p.m. July 22 at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Vandalia. Arrive 10 minutes early to catch a sneak peek of the show’s festivities with a fly-over by the Tora, Tora, Tora flight team.
The more than 100 parade entries include the Butler High School marching band, police and fire units and Wapakoneta Optimist Lawn-Mower Drill Team.
The grand marshal of the parade Lt. Col. Mike Jackson is asking veterans to participate by either marching or riding in a vehicle. Interested veterans may contact the American Veterans Institute at info@AmericanVeteransInstitute.org or (937) 367-1926.
Jackson will also be hosting the fourth national Operation Welcome Home, a celebration of America’s veterans, that will take place throughout the Miami Valley from Nov. 10-13. WHAT: Vectren Dayton Air Show
WHERE: Dayton International Airport, 3800 Wright Drive.
From Interstate 70, exit at Airport Access Road (Exit 32) and follow the signs. From Interstate 75, exit at Northwoods Boulevard (Exit 64) and follow the signs.
On-site parking is available at the air show. Specially designated parking areas exist for motor homes, recreational vehicles, campers and motorcycles. These motorists will be routed off North Dixie Drive near Skyview Drive and Vandalia Fire Station No. 1 in the parking area.
The Greater Dayton RTA will have express buses operating during the two-day event from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Shuttle runs from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and the University of Dayton Arena parking lot A. The shuttle service is $3 round trip. Children ages 5 and younger ride free.

HELPFUL TIPS:
Carpool to save money. Parking is $10 per car and $20 per bus and recreational vehicle.
■ Wrap food in clear packaging and leave the cooler at home.
■ Use ice packs instead of loose ice, which is prohibited because it is difficult to search.
■ Arrive early to stake out the few shaded spots under the wings of static display aircraft. Still, with shade limited, plan to be out under the open sky, and dress according to weather plans.
■ Stay hydrated by taking advantage of the free water stations or bringing your own bottled water.
■ While MasterCard and Visa can be used to purchase tickets at the gate, bring cash for the food concession booths inside.
■ Limit the size and number of carry-in items.
■ Keep your ticket stub and be sure to get a wristband to leave and re-enter the air show. Tickets are good for one day only.
SHADE: While the show takes place under an open sky, guests can find shade under the wings of static aircraft. However, prepare for the heat, as shaded areas tend to go very quickly.
The Vectren Kids’ Hangar and LEGO Construction Experience Tour take place in covered spaces, and the Journey to Tomorrow and Command Center Alpha exhibits have A/C.
CONCESSIONS: Everything from hot dogs to gyros will be for sale, as well as Pepsi products and beer. Complimentary drinking water will be available at several locations
Prices
COST: General-admission tickets can be purchased at the main gate and online through noon on July 22. Tickets are priced at $20 for adults and $15 for youths ages 6-11 and seniors. Children 5 and younger get in free.
Advance tickets are available at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force for adults ($18) and children ($13). Kroger supermarkets in the Greater Cincinnati and Miami Valley area are selling advance tickets for adults ($17) and children 6-11 and seniors ($12). Children 5 and younger get in free.
Parking is $10 per car and $20 for RVs, buses and large-size vehicles.
FAMILY DISCOUNT: The PNC Family 4-Pack, priced at $74.95, provides the best value for a family of four, with a 30 percent savings off on-site prices. Tickets may be purchased online through noon on July 22.
