The Western Ohio Watercolor Society (WOWS) is hosting its annual Member’s Show this month, featuring some of the finest watercolor artists in our region. The show juror, Charlie Rowland, a watercolor painter for over 40 years, selected 76 paintings to include in the exhibit.
There were two categories for entries, transparent watercolor and other water media which includes acrylic, gouache, casein, collage, and mixed, according to Misuk Goltz, organizer of the exhibit.
“The members of WOWS can be justly proud of the work on display in this wonderful exhibit,” said Rowland. “Both the quality and variety of the work submitted were impressive, making selection of award winners a challenge.”
Rowland, who currently teaches classes in Westerville and workshops at the Columbus Museum of Art and the Jodie McCallum Gallery, said he considered the emotional impact, the overall design, and the technical mastery of the medium when selecting the award winning pieces.
Taking home the Best in Show award was Yuki Hall of Beavercreek, for her painting, Bricktown, Detroit. In selecting Hall’s art, Rowland said: “This is a very well designed painting with graded washes that flow from cool to warm with nice use of all three textures-smooth, soft and rough.”
First place in the transparent category went to Misuk Goltz of Beavercreek, for her painting Quilter, Self Portrait. First place in the mixed media category went to Bonnie Kuntz of Washington Township, for her piece entitled A Cowboys Dream.
“We are trying to get more cultural events in downtown Urbana,” said Mike Major, full time sculptor and owner of the studio where the exhibit is on display. “This is a great event that will draw people who will enjoy the downtown.”
