Abstract combines with reality in “Recent Works: The Art of Larry Shineman,” the Springfield Museum of Art’s latest exhibition.

The exhibit will include 65 paintings and drawings from Shineman, a professor emeritus at Ohio State University. It opens Saturday and runs through Nov. 23.

Shineman has taken recognizable objects and abstracted them, with the oil paintings containing splotches of color with a basis in reality, said Ann Fortescue, the museum’s executive director.

The pen and ink drawings have characteristics of Asian art.

“There’s a wonderful balance between the paintings and drawings, almost like a conversation between the two,” said Fortescue.

She also noted the large size of certain paintings, as big as 3-5 feet.

“These canvases feel like you could step into them,” she said.

The exhibit opens at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 for nonmuseum members and free for members.

Shineman will appear for an artist’s talk 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5. Admission is the same as above.

Business hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 12:30-4:30 p.m. Sundays.
