Background/overview
Jerry and Janie Murrell and five sons opened their tiny carryout burger shop in Arlington, Va., in 1986. Their simple menu of an 80:20 ratio of fresh ground beef chuck patty that’s hand-formed and grill cooked, and fresh-cut fries cooked in cholesterol-free peanut oil quickly became a regional favorite. By 2001, the privately owned company had five locations in the Washington, D.C., metro area. In 2003, franchise opportunities were offered to interested individuals. Today, there are more than 1,300 locations in six countries.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Springfield opened in December 2013. The general manager is David Day, and his assistant managers are Autumn Baer and Damon Roush.
When you walk in you’ll see a large bin of shelled peanuts that are free to dine-in customers. Next, you pay when you order from the menu, receive an order number on your receipt, then seat yourself until your number is called. This family-friendly restaurant seats 60 people. And the front entrance patio seating has covered picnic tables as another dining option.
These days there are a few more items on the still simple menu; however, the burgers still top the list.
The Chamber of Greater Springfield sponsored a vote and Five Guys Burgers and Fries won as The Best of the Best Burger in Springfield for 2015.
