Consider it a new tradition.

For the third consecutive year, the Central State University Chorus will bring its 45-voice strong unit to test the acoustics of the Kuss Auditorium.

The concert will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Clark State Performing Arts Center.

The event is free, but tickets are required for admission.

The Chorus will perform a seamless mix of spiritual and gospel along with jazz this outing. Members of Central State’s jazz program will accompany the Chorus.

“We always like to highlight a different program with the Chorus,” said Jeremy Winston, Central State Chorus director and assistant professor of music. “Our jazz program is outstanding, and it’s good to offer another traditional American art form.”

The Chorus is coming off another big year, one that saw it perform a holiday concert in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic in December. The performance was taped for broadcast in the next holiday season.

Several students also accompanied Winston to the White House, where he was with another ensemble.

Winston said relationship building, timing and the ability to perform has given the Chorus a recognizable identity domestically and internationally, resulting in such unique performing opportunities.

This concert also celebrates the partnership between Clark State and Central State and Black History Month.

“Art is an opportunity to represent to the larger community that we are all alike in a way speeches can’t,” Winston said. “An emotionally uplifting song can touch somebody and we can cross bridges through the arts.

“Music transcends divisiveness. The music we sing will talk to great trials, but also how we can overcome obstacles.”
