Museum of Art offering spring, summer classes

The Springfield Museum of Art will offer several fun and educational activities this spring and summer starting with classes for all ages April 22 and ending on June 6.

All of the art classes combine inspiration from the museum’s exhibitions with instruction from highly qualified artist-instructors according to Eve Fleck, Museum operations manager,.

Youth classes will include the Art Achievers class on Saturdays with separate sessions for ages 8-10 and 11-14. This class is designed for students who may wish to pursue art at higher levels in the future, such as a public schools Gifted in Art program or AP and IB Art in high school. Homeschoolers are also welcome in the program.

“Children are absolutely thrilled and excited when they enter the galleries and then go back to the classroom to pursue their ideas. It’s wonderful to see the creative sparks fly,” said Fleck.

No specific experience is required. Art Achievers is an ongoing class with new techniques, tools and projects each session. Four partial scholarships are available which can be applied for by emailing smoa@springfieldart.net.

For ages 15 through adult, a new class, Acrylic & Mixed Media Expression, will be taught by Columbus College of Art and Design graduate and accomplished artist Kelley Booze. The class, which meets on Wednesday evenings, will explore painting, stamping and collage methods for all experience levels.

Another new addition is Gallery Drawing with seasoned artist-educator, Tricia Tallman, who previously taught at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. This class meets on Saturday afternoons and will include a variety of dry and wet media and encourage observational work from art on display in the museum’s galleries.

Two sessions of the popular Watercolor Studies are being offered by veteran instructor Enid Willard Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Stained Glass is also back this session with Yellow Springs artist Sara Gray, who is offering a fast paced two-Saturday workshop on May 30 and June 6.

“The museum is excited to expand community partnerships this summer,” said Fleck.

These include the new Nature Explorers Camp, which includes art and nature activities in collaboration with the National Trail Parks and Recreation District. Fleck said the museum is expecting a big influx in community partnerships through a field trip program that will focus on local day camp and care centers.

Field trips to the museum are highly interactive with gallery games, hands-on learning in the Interactive Art Lab, a self-guided sculpture trail scavenger hunt activity on the museum’s back lawn along Buck Creek, and options for an art making project in one of the classrooms.

Fleck said these activities, classes and workshops fill fast. For more information or to register, go to www.springfieldart.net under the LEARN tab or call 937-325-4673.
