Each vehicle on the lot — and the inventory will average about 250 — is clearly marked with the price and the warranty. While all vehicles come with a 30-day warranty, some also have manufacturer’s warranty. In some cases, customers have the ability to purchase extended coverage. There is also a five-day return policy on any purchase.
Buscher explains that the customer will deal with the same associate from start to finish.
“We don’t get you into the car, then over to a finance person, then back and forth,” Buscher said. “You’ll be greeted by an associate; our pricing, warranty and trade-in policy will be explained; and then we’ll determine what you’re looking for.”
Once the customer has found a car, taken a test drive and expressed interest, he or she moves into the finance phase.
“We determine if they want to trade in their car, and if so, the associate gathers the data and enters it. Our buyers then appraise the car and make an offer in writing. The offer is valid for seven days, and we’ll buy the car for that amount — even if the customer doesn’t buy another vehicle from us,” Buscher said.
“The associate is also now entering all of the credit information into the computer and when the lenders make their offer, the customer looks it over, right on the screen. It’s up to the customer to pick the lender they want, not us,” Buscher said.
“Once we have a deal, the business office is alerted to prepare paperwork while the associate spends some time with the customer, going over the vehicle so they are familiar with all of the functions and features, and a final inspection,” Buscher said. “We then do a final prep, fill it with gas, and the new owner drives off.”
The CarMax inventory features both domestic and import cars, and also has SUVs, vans and pickup trucks. Most of the inventory is vehicles from one to six years old with fewer than 60,000 miles; all have been inspected and reconditioned.
“For the buyer that can’t find just what they want on our lot, they can also search our inventory of over 25,000 vehicles and a vehicle can be transferred here,” Buscher said.
