It was a record-setting day at Carillon Historical Park on Sept. 19 as the Dayton Concours d’Elegance was held for the fourth time. More than 4,200 people attended, according to Dayton History, Montgomery County’s official historical organization. All proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit.
This celebration of classic, antique and special-interest vehicles, both two- and four-wheeled, is a feast for the eyes. Thousands of car and motorcycle lovers came to the 65-acre park to enjoy almost 180 vehicles, each other and museum exhibits — including the museum’s own significant collection of permanently exhibited vehicles — and demonstrations.
Skip Peterson, concours chairman, said, “We’ve never had a crowd like this, and we’ve received lots of compliments and positive comments about the event and the cars. We filled the entire parking lot and had to use overflow parking (at the University of Dayton) for the first time.
“It shows the community embraces classic cars and fine automobiles, and it’s for a great cause. It was the most diverse selection of cars we’ve ever had. We clearly established the quality of cars. The judges said it was very, very difficult to judge, with some cars winning by only half a point.”
The most significant vehicle was the 1900 Braley pickup truck, Peterson said. It’s believed to be the first-ever pickup truck and is restored on research done by Charles “Chic” Kleptz.
“There also was a Russian 1962 GAZ Volga. To know that it is one of fewer than a dozen of these in the United States and it was here at the show is special, too.
A surprise win was garnered in Class M2 by a meticulously restored 1970 Honda Enduro XR 75, done to factory-correct, like-new condition. “It’s not the money (put into it) we judge. It was surprising that a Honda dirt bike won, but the owner, Marcus C. Swan II, had done an excellent job,” Peterson said.
The concour’s featured marques were the cars of Walter P. Chrysler and Alfa Romeos.
Visitors were treated to a free glossy show program; a live jazz combo, David Greer and the Classic Jazz Stompers; hospitality from presenting sponsor AAA Miami Valley; and plenty of food and beverages available for purchase.
The Carillon Park Rail and Steam Society provided free rides on its miniature steam-powered trains.
Noted Porsche collector John Dixon presented his Taj Ma Garaj Award to Joseph Hooker of Beavercreek for his 1969 Honda CB-160. The award is based on the vehicle Dixon would most like to have in his collection.
The Col. Edward Deeds Judges’ Choice, picked by the 42 concours judges, went to America’s Packard Museum — The Citizens Motorcar Co. of Dayton, for its 1934 Packard 12 Boat Tail Speedster.
The Jeffrey Siler Spirit Award was awarded to Don Williams of Dayton. The award was created to honor the individual that best exemplified the spirit of the late automotive enthusiast.
A 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C2500 SWB, owned by Rick Grant of Dayton, drove away with the Charles F. Kettering People’s Choice Award.
The eagerly awaited R.H. Grant Best of Show Award went to Norma Perin of Cincinnati for her 1937 Packard V12 Convertible Sedan.
Perin’s car has been in her family for 51 years. Five years ago her husband said he wanted the car restored and then he passed away. Restoration was finished just a month ago, and the concours was the first time the Packard has been shown.
