Petco operates a half-dozen pet stores around the Dayton area, including one at 2322 Far Hills Ave. in Oakwood that is less than two miles away from Town & Country shopping center. A manager at the Oakwood store referred questions about potential impact to his store to corporate officials, who could not be reached Thursday.
The shopping center on Stroop Road between Far Hills Avenue and Shroyer Road in Kettering is in the midst of a $7 million renovation that includes extensive changes to the shopping center’s interior, its facade, and to the parking lot, and added 2,500 square feet to an existing 10,000-square-foot Trader Joe’s grocery store.
Kettering city officials regard Town & Country and the surrounding area as a downtown of sorts. Kettering City Council approved a $700,000, five-year, forgivable loan to help pay for the retail center’s renovation. If the shopping center’s owners meet criteria, they would receive the grant when the renovation project is complete.
“A revitalized Town & Country is critical to the health of the retail market in the city of Kettering,” Gregg Gorsuch, Kettering’s economic development manager, said earlier this year when the renovation project was announced.
