Wal-Mart announced last month that it would close 269 of its stores in the U.S. and globally in an attempt to "ensure assets were aligned with strategy."

All of the stores, were scheduled to close by Jan. 28. Displaced workers were expected to be transferred to nearby locations, according to a statement released by the company.

Retail photographer Nicholas Eckhart captured a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Bedford, Ohio, on Jan. 28, the store's last day of business.

Have a look around:

Shoppers take advantage of the massive clearance sale — 75 percent off most merchandise.

Most departments were barren, but a few late shoppers continue to browse.

The cosmetics aisle is nearly empty.

Just a few stray items remain in the toys and games aisle.

Shoppings look through the last of the clothing in the women's department.

Produce and other grocery items are completely gone.

Shelves and displays that were once stocked full of books, magazines and electronics are in disarray.

There was plenty of holiday merchandise to be found.

Shoppers head to check-out to make their final purchases.
