Tecumseh’s running game too much for Kenton Ridge

Tecumseh handled the sloppy conditions at Kenton Ridge by calling for a heavy dose of running plays and trying only three passes.

The lack of balance may not be ideal, but the Arrows’ ground game was effective enough that they didn’t need to put the ball up for grabs.

They rushed for 308 yards on 50 attempts and pounded out a 14-0 Central Buckeye Conference victory Friday.

Sophomore Gavin Wasson scored on a 57-yard dash without being touched, and senior Brody Martin’s 42-yard sprint around end set up Jayden McFarland’s 3-yard TD as Tecumseh built a 14-0 halftime lead and hung on.

“I’m an offensive line coach, and that’s old Tecumseh football right there,” Arrows coach Chris Cory said. “We kept the defense off the field. They played outstanding when they were out there, but any defense’s best friend is if the offense can control the clock.”

Wasson rushed for 111 yards on 12 attempts. Martin had 80 yards and Kenyon Watson 58 on a dozen carries each.

“They’re a big, strong team, and that’s what they do. I thought they were able to push us around on a muddy field,” KR coach Joel Marratta said.

“We came back in the second half and played with a little better pad level and didn’t give up any more points. Our kids never quit, and I’m real proud of that.”

The Arrows (5-4, 2-1 CBC) had a 222-57 edge in total yardage in the first half and finished with a 320-210 advantage. The Cougars (5-4, 1-2) are coming off three straight playoff appearances, but that streak looks to be coming to an end.

Tecumseh took advantage of a short field to strike first. Hunter Hensley recorded a sack on fourth down, giving the Arrows the ball at their 47, leading to McFarland’s score.

The defense also rose up late in the first half when Watson made a diving interception to preserve a two-touchdown lead.

Dylan Lemen, a 5-10, 145-pound freshman, took over in the second half at quarterback for the Cougars in place of senior Noah Schleinitz. He orchestrated a long drive midway through the fourth quarter, notching the team’s first three completions of the night.

But the scoring threat ended when Kenton Ridge was stopped on downs at the 8-yard line.

“That’s probably the best four quarters we’ve played this year,” Cory said.
