State wrestling duals reach Elite Eight

The wait was worth it for the Sidney wrestling team.

Sidney, the top seed in Region 1-B of the OHSAA state team tournament, watched Troy edge Beavercreek in the regioanl quarterfinals of the state duals Wednesday night after fifth-seeded Fairborn pulled out of the tournament.

The Trojans got a pin from Matthew MacGillivray at 195 and decisions by Andrew Kostecka and Alex Dalton to come-from-behind and hand the second seeded Beavers a 34-32 loss.

Sidney beat Troy 36-24 to move to the Region 1 finals next week. Sidney will face Oregon Clay regional finals for a spot in the Elite 8.

Jacob Sharp got things rolling for the Yellow Jackets with a pin in at 33 seconds at 113. Alex Willman and Garrick Ginter recorded pins for Sidney, who also got major decisions from Rhett Rosengarten, Logan Calvert and Ryan Penley in taking a 36-9 lead.

DIVISION II

Graham 81, Celina 0; Graham 55, Wapakoneta 19: The Falcons won 10 of the 13 matches wrestled against third seeded Wapakoneta to advance to the Region 16 finals.

Brent Moore (120), Cody Ohmeiss (126), Micah Jordan (132), Nate Henkle (138), Bo Jordan (160), Lane Thomas (170) and Anthony Welty (220) all recorded pins for the Falcons.

Carroll 48, Tipp City 27: After knocking off Thurgood Marshall in the first round, the Patriots advanced to a Region 16 final at Graham with a win over fourth-seeded Tipp City.

Tipp had advanced with a 42-36 win over top seeded Greenville in the other opening round match.

Carroll got pins from Nick Berry (113), Adam Wilhelm (120) and Mykel Seabury (126) to jump to a 21-3 lead, but Tipp came back and cut the lead to 21-14 on a pin by Gabe Callicoat at 145. After swapping matches, Carroll was able to clinch the match on a pin by Ian Czanik at 195.

DIVISION III

Deer Park 38, Carlisle 36: The Indians won the last five matches, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit against the third seed.

Deer Park opened a 20-6 lead on the second seed before clinching the match with an 18-0 run in the middle weights before the Indians started to come back.

Jimmy Sandlin (170), Daniel Bays (182), Marcus Smith (195), Darren Milligan (220) and Chauncy Vick (285) closed out the night on a 26-0 run for the Indians.

Blanchester 42, Greeneview 36: Mechanicsburg held a 36-12 lead in matches wrestled, but five forfeits gave Blanchester the win.

Mason Gallagher (113), Logan LaCure (120), Andew Hoskins (126), Armani Robinson (182), Adrian Harding (195) and Wyatt Hovan (285) all recorded pins for Greeneview.

Dayton Christian 37, Dixie 35; Blanchester 45, Dayton Christian 33: Nathan Jackson's 11-7 win at 285 helped the fourth-seeded Crusaders upset top-seeded Dixie in the opening round Wednesday night.

The Crusaders led 34-6 heading into 152 before Dixie came back to take a 35-34 lead heading into the final match of the night.

Dayton Christian, however, fell in the regional semifinal to Blanchester 45-33. DC led 33-3 heading into 152 against Blanchester.

Versailles 48, Covington 18: The Tigers lost just four matches in taking the Region 24 regional semi and set up a regional final showdown with MAC foe Coldwater.

Versailles reached the second round by defeating the state’s top ranked Division III team, Troy Christian, 48-26 behind 30 points from forfeits.

Covington took a 52-27 win over Mechanicsburg by recording bonus points in nine matches.

The Buccs recorded eight pins and a major decision while Mechanicsburg recorded two pins and two forfeits.
