Beavercreek tops Springfield in overtime

Springfield’s Michael Wallace hit a 3-pointer at the regulation buzzer to force a 62-62 tie against Beavercreek in a GWOC National East basketball game on Friday night at Ed Zink Fieldhouse.

But Beavercreek prevailed in overtime, 70-69, when Evan Saylor sank a free throw with .9 seconds left.

Danny Davis hit a 3-pointer and then followed with a free throw after a Beavercreek foul to tie the game at 33-33 midway through the third quarter. After Beavercreek hit two foul shots over the next two possessions, Michael McKay hit a 3 from the top of the key to give the Wildcats their first lead.

Ian Whitlow, Peyton Yong and Evan Saylor hit baskets during a 7-3 over the next two minutes that gave Beavercreek a four-point lead. Davis hit a 3 from about five feet behind the arc at the buzzer that cut Beavercreek’s lead to 42-41 at the end of the third.

The teams traded baskets for much of the fourth quarter. McKay hit a basket off a pass from Michael Wallace to give Springfield a 54-53 lead. Baldwin hit a jumper after a spin move and completed a three-point play after a foul with two minutes left to give Beavercreek the lead, then scored on a basket 30 seconds later to put the Beavers up 58-54.

Davis hit two free throws on Springfield’s next possession, and Beavercreek traveled after its next inbounds pass. That possession ended when Springfield coach Isiah Carson was called for a technical foul for being out of the coaches’ box with 1:11 left. Jon Alessandro made 1-of-2 foul shot attempts to give Beavercreek a 3-point lead. Baldwin hit a layup on the following possession to give Beavercreek a 61-56 lead, but Davis followed with a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left to pull Springfield within two points.

Beavercreek made one foul shot to go up by three, then Wallace’s 3-pointer sent it to overtime.

Beavercreek went on a 9-0 run in the middle of the first quarter to take a 12-3 lead. The Beavers extended the lead out to 19-9 early in the second quarter, but Springfield fought back. McKay hit a mid-range jumper from along the right baseline with three seconds left in the second to cut Beavercreek’s lead to 29-25 at halftime.

Springfield returns home on Tuesday to play Miamisburg in a GWOC crossover game. Beavercreek plays next at Wayne on Tuesday.
