Traffic still slow after Friday morning pileup

Eastbound Interstate 70 is open to traffic after two closures for crashes between the 51 and 59 mile markers.

A crash involving 15 vehicles, including four semi-tractor trailers, was reported around 7:20 a.m. near the South Charleston Pike exit. The crash shut down all lanes of traffic for several hours, and was briefly reopened around 11:30 a.m.

By 11:45 a.m., crews closed the highway again.

Four people were taken to an area hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, officials said.

The crash involved 11 cars and 4 semi-tractor trailers. Fog was reported to be extremely dense in the area, and first responders were warned to use “extreme caution.”

Mutual aid was requested from several jurisdictions, as officials didn’t know how serious the crash would be.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is encouraging motorists to take the detour route of Ohio 4 to Ohio 40 to I-70 East.
