Mike DeWine launches campaign site, set to announce run for governor

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is expected to announce on Sunday that he is running for governor and his campaign manager, Dave Luketic, today announced he had launched a “campaign website” on Monday night.

Luketic confirmed that DeWine will make “an exciting announcement” at his Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social on Sunday at his Cedarville home.

The event, which has been held most years since the first one in 1976, is open to the public.

Luketic said there will be “pie and ice cream for all” at the event, which is from 1 to 5 p.m. at 2587 Conley Road in Cedarville. Parking is available.

“In Republican circles this is one of the big events of the year,” Luketic said. “Unlike a traditional campaign event, there is no official RSVP. People just show up.”

DeWine's new website is at www.mikeDeWine.com.

If DeWine announces a run for the Republican nomination in 2018 he joins an already crowded field of contenders from both parties seeking to replace Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a term-limited Republican.

Candidates on the GOP side include Secretary of State Jon Husted, U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci of Wadsworth and Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor.

On the Democratic side, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, former state representative Connie Pillich of Cincinnati, state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, and former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton of Akron are in the running.

DeWine got his start in politics as Greene County prosecutor from 1977 to 1981. He was in the Ohio Senate from 1980 to 1982 and the U.S. House of Representatives from 1982-90.

DeWine served as lieutenant governor from 1990 to 1994 and then in the U.S. Senate from 1995-2006, when he lost his re-election bid.

He was elected Ohio attorney general in 2011.
