TODAY’S MODERATOR: Fearless Girl vs. the haters

Have you heard yet about “Fearless Girl”?

She's the small bronze sculpture of a young girl standing defiantly, hands on hips, just a few steps from the famous statue of Wall Street's charging bull. The temporary sculpture installed for International Women's Day appears to be facing down the iconic bull, a la man vs. tank in Tiananmen Square. Initially well-regarded, as with all public art projects, the controversy has finally set in.

MORE OPINION: Getting out the mama-bear claws for everyone.

"Some have derided the statute as 'fake corporate feminism,' suggesting that the statue is less about promoting gender equity than it is a publicity stunt," according to The Atlantic. "They see the installment as a successful marketing coup masquerading as a message of female empowerment, or Wall Street pinkwashing. Others lament the use of a young girl's image to represent the ambitions and goals of grown women."

Also, the bull's creator, Arturo Di Modica, is upset — claiming that his representation of a strong economy has now been recontextualized without his say-so into an anti-woman piece.
