Man charged with robbery of local Kroger

A man accused of robbing the local Kroger grocery was placed in Tri-County Jail on Friday.

Lamarr N. Helmuth, 21, was arrested Friday and booked into the Tri-County Jail after he was arrested in Clark County on warrants out of Champaign County.

A Champaign County grand jury indicted Helmuth on two counts of robbery, one count of aggravated robbery and one count felonious assault for a robbery that occurred at the Urbana Kroger on March 30.

According to Urbana police, Helmuth allegedly tried to steal liquor from the store, 1637 E. U.S. Route 36. While an employee tried to detain him before police arrived, Helmuth reportedly bit the employee’s hand to the point where it bled. He also allegedly grabbed a box cutter from the waist of the employee and began swinging it, resulting in an abrasion to the employee’s side. Helmith then ran to a truck and tried to get the driver to help him escape, but the driver reportedly refused to help him. Helmuth fled on foot, police said.
