Now's the time for back-to-school bargains

Even though none of us are really ready to admit it in my house, it’s time to start thinking about school. The conversation has shifted from ways to spend a lazy sun-filled day to what choices need to be made about clothes, shoes, school supplies and backpacks.

Now is the time to get shopping since nearly every retail outlet that offers school-related items is trying to sell for less than the other guy down the street.

Whether it’s in-store or on-line, it’s often difficult to keep up with quickly-changing sale prices. So if you find items you need at a good value, snap them up.

If you’re in need of new school clothes, Kohl’s gold-star clearance items are up to 70 percent off and final sale items are 80 percent off.

JC Penney, the store that seems to have a perpetual sale, has lots of clothing at 40 to 60 percent off and if you order on-line, all shoes ship free. Clearance items are 50 to 70 percent off, with final markdowns up to 80 percent off regular prices.

Take time to shop sale ads and websites before you leave the house to help organize your trip and save time.

Some stores offer different deals in-store and on-line, which makes spending a few minutes comparing deals worth the time.

Most stores have jumped on the uniform bandwagon, so if you need to purchase those items, choices abound and some prices seem almost unbelievable.

On Tuesday, Aug. 3, Target was offering on-line selections for $14.99 and under, with free shipping on orders of $50 or more.

For girls, uniforms including skirts, jumpers, pants, dresses, polos, button-front shirts and cardigans. Boys choices include pants, shorts and long-and short-sleeved polos.

Old Navy’s Tuesday on-line offer included some bargain-basement prices and free shipping on orders over $50. Polo shirts for boys and girls were $5. Uniform pants for boys and girls were $10. Skirts were $10 and boys shorts were $8. Many items are available in extended sizes including slim and husky or plus.

And, if you’re Old Navy’s friend on Facebook, you can find additional coupons.

So if we’re honest, the $5 Old Navy pieces may not last long, depending on how hard your kids are on clothes. If you need (or want) higher-quality options, check out Land’s End. They offer a better guarantee and will stand behind their items, even when kids are extra-rough on things.

Short-sleeved polos are $15.50, with a $2.50 discount for purchases of three or more. Solid-colored skirts for girls are $22.50 to $29.50; plaid skirts are $35.50.

Land’s End is offering a new $5 kid’s clothing special every week along with free shipping on orders over $50.

Signing up for e-mails with most retailers will yield coupons or special shipping offers, which can save even more money. If you find the offers aren’t useful, you can always remove yourself from any e-mail lists.
