The first Minority Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Elementary School, 631 S. Yellow Springs St.

The free event will include several screenings, such blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and PSA.

The event is being held by the Clark County Unit of the NAACP, Community Mercy Health Partners, The Links, Inc. and the Clark County Combined Health District. The organizers hope to make the health fair an annual event, said NAACP President Denise Williams.

“Hopefully we can catch things folks in the community let go unnoticed because of funding,” Williams said.

The goal is to reach out to minorities and other members of the neighborhood who need health services.

“They’re working to do an outreach to the city and provide screening services that are free or at no cost,” said Anita Biles, a health educator at the health district.

The Mammogram Mobile Unit will also be in attendance. They will be taking walk-up appointments with an insurance card and identification card.

“Even if they don’t have insurance, they’ll help accommodate them,” Biles said.

It will also include more than 25 local agencies covering different areas in health and social services, as well as the Clark County Sheriff’s Office Drug Take Back program for prescription medications. More than 100 free weight scales and blood pressure cuffs will be made available for needy families.
