Champaign County brothers team up for 2 pizza eating championships

There was just no getting in between the Lewis brothers and their pizza Wednesday.

The brothers combined for nearly eight slices at the Champaign County Fair Pizza Eating Contest, including perhaps a record breaking four and a half slices in two minutes by older brother Jason Lewis, and won both the 12-to-16-year-old competition and the 17 and older competition.

“They call him the human black hole, the garbage disposal,” 13-year-old Jerricho Lewis said of his older brother.

The Lewis brothers are from West Liberty.

But Jerricho wasn’t shy of putting down pizza himself. He finished off three slices in under two minutes to secure his second championship in as many years.

“Just shove it in your mouth and drink some Coke,” he said of his strategy. “I’m a fast eater.”

Ken Jarboe, the owner of Sparky’s and Freddie’s Pizzeria, said the event that’s in its 16th year is a lot of fun.

“We have a blast with this every year,” he said. “It’s so much fun to see all of the families come out and participate in this.”

He said it’s an event he looks forward to.

“It’s always a great turnout, we have a lot of fun and the kids seem to really enjoy it,” Jarboe said.

Competitions were broken up into ages this year. Kids 5-to-7-years-old ate, then kids 8-to-11 years-old took their turn.

Evan Meyer took that age group. He said he came in with a plan.

“With the first piece, I dumped my Pepsi onto my pizza to make it soggy so it would go down easier,” he said. “Then I choked the rest down after that.”

Also winning a championship was Nehemiah Griffin, who took home the 5-to-7-year-old crown.
