Census: Clark and Champaign cities losing population

New Carlisle and Urbana are losing residents, according to new population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

New Carlisle’s population declined by 1.5 percent, losing about 90 people, from the 2006-2010 5-year estimate to the 2011-2015 estimate released this week.

Urbana’s population decline over the same period was 1 percent, a loss of about 120 people.

The new estimates put the village of Enon’s population at 2,606, an increase of nearly 2 percent.

The American Community Survey is the census bureau’s way of providing population and demographic estimates for all communities more frequently than the official census, which is conducted every 10 years.

The survey puts out one-year and five-year estimates annually. The 1-year estimates provide information on communities of 50,000 people or more. The 5-year estimates, which average data from five years of surveys, are the only ones that include smaller communities.
