New Carlisle, Bethel Twp. ready for neighborhood cleanups

Just like the early birds that get the worms, early New Carlisle and Bethel Twp. residents will get to take advantage of free Dumpsters this Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.

The Dumpsters will be available until noon or until they fill up.

June 10 is Spring Clean Up Day and those folks with proof of residence in New Carlisle will find Dumpsters located at the site of the former West Lake Elementary on 621 Walsh Drive. Bethel Twp. residents are to use the Dumpsters at the site of the former Park Layne Elementary at 620 Cliffside Drive.

“You will have to show your license to prove that you are from the city,” said New Carlisle Mayor Mike Lowrey. The same goes for Bethel Twp.

These Dumpsters will be provided by the city of New Carlisle, Bethel Twp. and Clark County Solid Waste District.

However you cannot dump just anything off. There are restrictions. These Dumpsters are being provided to take some of the stuff that your weekly trash collection won’t take. Leave your normal weekly bags of trash on your curb. They cannot be dropped off here.

“It’s mostly (for) furniture and construction or demolition debris. Old windows, doors, bricks, wood … Also old barbecue grills, bicycles and any other metal items,” Bethel Twp. Trustee Nancy Brown said.

According to Lowrey, if you’ve redone your house, this is the perfect way to get construction leftovers out of your way.

Disposal is free for the most part but there are some exemptions. For example appliances and tires will be accepted but fees up to $5 each might apply on some.

Tractor and farm tires won’t be accepted and neither will electronics, like that old dinosaur-sized television. Sorry. There are other places to dispose of these, and they will get recycled there instead of taking space in the Dumpster and landfill. Space is limited.

“We definitely wouldn’t be able to handle someone bringing in the remains of tornado damaged buildings,” Brown said. “We are only getting five Dumpsters total — two for construction and demolition debris, two for old furniture and other hard to dispose of large items, and one for metal. Then a trailer for tires and something for appliances with coolant.”

After the tornado, a lot of limbs and branches were blown down in Park Layne but these cannot go into this collection. Instead folks need to call the city at 937-845-9492 or township at 937-849-9499 to schedule yard waste pick up.

Hazardous materials like paints and pesticide cannot be dropped off either but the solid waste district can tell you how to dispose of these items. Brown has a suggestion.

“For latex paint they can just take the lid off and let it dry out, or pour it out onto newspaper or kitty litter and let it dry out,” she said. “Then just put it in the trash.”

Please remember the recycling bins for cardboard, paper, cans and bottles that are already available, and save the Dumpster space for someone who needs to get rid of some old unsightly tires, grills or appliances.

The collection will close once the Dumpsters and trucks are filled or at noon if they aren’t filled. Any items left after that will be considered illegal dumping.

Meanwhile you don’t have to live in Bethel Twp. or New Carlisle to take advantage of our county’s free recycling centers and those paper recycling bins located at many of the schools.

It may seem like the world is going crazy on the news but we can at least keep our corner of the world nice by keeping debris from accumulating.
