Clark County to auction cars, jewelry, items confiscated from dealers

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office will auction items from its property room Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. to raise money for the department.

The county has a small storage space to house items, Clark County Sheriff Deb Burchett said, and some of them have been there since the early 1990s.

“It’s property that was taken, no one claimed or it was given to us through the court on a case we may have had,” Burchett said.

So the sheriff decided to should auction the items to bring some money back into the department. The auction will have cars, jewelry, four-wheelers, shoes, movies, game systems, games, weed eaters, leaf blowers, kitchenware and even sporting equipment.

“A lot of these items are from drug dealers,” she said. “When we would go in and we would do a search warrant on the residence, certain items we would take because we knew they were connected with the drugs. We have eight vehicles out there for sale. Some of them are from drug dealers and some of them are from the sheriff’s office that we no longer can use.”

The sale will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Mercantile Building at the Clark County Fairgrounds. Potential buyers are asked to bring cash or checks with proper identification.

The money will be used to help the department with a variety of things.

“We are looking at new cameras for the jails. We are looking for more vehicles on the streets,” Burchett said.

The money also will be used to offset possible budget cuts as the county faces tight budgets, the sheriff said.

“What I would have to do is lay people off. I would have to start with my non-commissioned people who work in my offices,” Burchett said. “I would have to take the deputies and have them work in those non-commissioned positions. So, that would hurt all the way around.”

The sheriff hopes to raise at least $5,000 from the sale.

“I mean it’s not going to bring us millions of dollars like we would like to have but it will bring us some,” Burchett said. “It’s just a little stepping stone and that’s all we can ask for every day, is a stepping stone.”
