Marshals search for suspect in Jeff Wellington killing

The search for a suspect in the death of Jeff Wellington took U.S. Marshals Service agents to a residence in the 1200 block of South Yellow Springs Street on Friday afternoon.

They didn't find their target, 17-year-old Tyrin Hawkins, but police and the marshals will continue to respond to tips from the public, Springfield Police Division officials said.

Agents took up a perimeter around the address less than 90 minutes ago and searched the property on a tip that Hawkins, wanted in the April shooting death of Jeff Wellington, would be there.

Police announced last week that Hawkins is the named suspect in the shooting that occurred outside the Coventry Village Apartments on North Limestone Street. Wellington, a standout high school athlete, was trying to resolve a dispute involving several people when he was shot to death, police have said.

Springfield Police Chief Stephen Moody said his police division has been working with the marshals service since the investigation began. He repeated a request from the police division asking the public for help in locating Hawkins.

If you think you know where Hawkins is or if you have information on his whereabouts, you are asked to call the police division's dispatch center at 937-324-7680.
