Clark County inmate found dead in jail cell

A Clark County Jail inmate who died on Thursday night committed suicide in his jail cell, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Jason M. Smith, 43, was found during the first check of cells by third-shift deputies at about 11:30 p.m., a report from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said.

A deputy noticed Smith’s cell window had been covered up from the inside, the report said, and then spotted his feet hanging.

He was found hanging from his bed sheets, the report said, and deputies began to administer CPR but were unable to resuscitate him.

Smith was also hooked up to an AED a few minutes later, the report said, but it instructed deputies not to administer a shock and to continue with CPR.

Springfield Medics arrived on scene at about 11:50, the report said.

“The deputies couldn’t have done a better job,” Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said. It all happened quickly, he said.

Smith was admitted to the jail on Aug. 8 for violating a protection order, Kelly said.

An investigation into Smith’s death is ongoing by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and the Clark County Coroner, the report said.
