"The announcer, between sets, was announcing there was a dog locked in a vehicle," Will Costa, who recorded video of the incident, told Global News Monday.
"The owners were not around and someone had mentioned they had called the police. So we kind of waited around a bit until police showed up or the owners showed up."
After debating how best to get to the dog, Costa told Global News a man grabs a nearby rock and repeatedly throws it at the rear right window of the car, eventually breaking it, opening the front passenger side door and getting the dog out.
Bystanders cheered the effort.
The owners returned to their car about 50 minutes after the dog was freed from the car, Costa said.
"The man who saved the dog explained what the situation was," Costa said. "At the time they felt they did nothing wrong, they left the window open and claimed that would be more than enough for the dog to be able to breathe and be comfortable."
One woman can be heard telling the dog, "Your owner is an (expletive)."
Costa seemed more sympathetic toward the owners.
"I'm sure they love the dog. I just hope they realize how close they were to losing their dog that day."
Global News reported that Ontario Provincial Police said Monday the owner was not concerned about vehicle damage. The dog was returned to the owner.
An investigation by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is pending.
