A Springfield native will pay tribute to the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement in song.

Lauren Kelley will take on the great women of gospel music at the next Sanctuary Series concert, 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at High Street United Methodist Church.

The concert replaces a previously announced show, Connected in Concert.

The show is free as part of the ongoing monthly Sanctuary Series. Free-will offerings to support the series will be accepted.

The program will feature narrative and song, including the music of artists such as Shirley Caesar, Rosetta Tharpe, Clara Ward and Mahalia Jackson. The latter was a favorite of King.

According to program notes, it will be a musical journey that will examine the social circumstances the artists lived in as well as what shaped their social conscience and musical message.

Kent Brooks, contemporary worship leader at High Street United Methodist, will accompany Kelley with the music.

A reception and meet-and-greet with the performers will follow the concert.
