The exhibition is open during museum hours in the Deer Gallery through Jan. 7, 2018.
A Wright State University graduate and Yellow Springs resident, Rosengarten is a museum member whose work at a members’ show caught the attention of executive director Ann Fortescue, who invited Rosengarten to display her themed works.
The exhibition’s 12 works depict flowers, tall grasses, lily pads and water. But the way they are portrayed lead you to look at these familiar objects in a different way, said Erin Shapiro, museum assistant curator.
“Everything is inspired by real life, and they show the immediacy of the artist’s hand and insight into how she sees her subject matter,” she said.
The work is in the Romanticism tradition, which rose in the 1800s and embraced the natural world.
Another factor that impresses Shapiro is the large scale and immersive feel of Rosengarten’s works, surrounding the viewer and making them feel like they could step into it.
Shapiro suggests “Gardens & Ponds” will open up a dialogue among visitors.
“It will make you think about the world you’re in as a whole and complement the landscape art in our permanent collection,” she said.
“Gardens & Ponds” has been well attended and received a good response so far, and Shapiro encourages others to discover it. Rosengarten will speak about her work during an artist talk at the museum at a later date.
The popular exhibition “Industrial Nature: Works by Michelle Stitzlein” will be open through Sunday, May 28, at the museum. The 71st Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition will open June 25.
